Annie M.G. Schmidt was born in Kapelle in 1911. Traces of this can still be seen in various places around the village. For example, there are several statues of her, as well as of the characters she created. A bust of her stands near her birthplace on Kerkplein. There is also a neighborhood entirely themed around Annie M.G. Schmidt’s characters. This is the “Zuidhoek,” also known as the “Jip and Janneke neighborhood.” Here, even the street names are named after characters from her stories. Streets you’ll encounter in the neighborhood include, for example: Floddertje, Petteflet, and Minoes. Various statues and other details can also be found in this neighborhood. For instance, you’ll find Dikkertje Dap and Takkie in the playground. The bicycle tunnel built under the Kapelle-Biezelinge station has also been brightened up entirely in the Jip and Janneke style.
