Spotting porpoises
Porpoises and seals swim in the Oosterschelde. They can often be spotted from a boat, but they’re also easily seen from the dike near Wemeldinge. You’ll have to keep a close eye out, though, because they only break the surface briefly to breathe. Usually, you’ll see no more than the upper part of their backs. Your best chance of spotting porpoises is on calm, windless days. The water is then flat, and that’s porpoise weather. You’ll have a chance to see this smallest species of whale! On very calm days, you can even hear them snorting as they surface to breathe.
Other places
Other places where you might spot a porpoise include: the breakwater at Zierikzee, the harbor at Burghsluis, near Wissenkerke, Colijnsplaat, and the Goese Sas.
