French Cemetery

The French War Cemetery lies next to the municipal cemetery in Kapelle on Kitskinderscheweg 1. At the entrance, there is an information panel. The French War cemetery is accessible on foot. This war cemetery has two monuments: a wall of names with a column and mosaic, and a column that is crowned with the Gallic rooster.

After the Second World War, the mortal remains of all the soldiers who had died on Dutch soil while serving under the French flag which had not been returned to France were buried here. Here lie the remains of French, Moroccan and Algerian soldiers and one Syrian soldier. Every year, Kapelle holds a memorial service in the French cemetery. Find out more about the French cemetery on the Zeeuwse Ankers website (in Dutch). If you would like to learn more about the French soldiers who fought in the Second World War, then visit the memorial museum Memorial 40-45 in Kapelle.
