Eversdijk and Abbekinderen

There are two hamlets in the municipality of Kapelle: Eversdijk and Abbekinderen. The hamlet Eversdijk was a municipality in its own right until 1815, when it was integrated in the municipality of Kapelle. The hamlet of Abbekinderen lies partly in Kapelle and partly in the municipality of Goes.

Eversdijk

Eversdijk originated in the 11th century on peatland. Eversdijk exists thanks to peat, which was dug up there, and then sold. The name comes from a certain Mr Everdeis, whom we don’t know much about. He had asked the residents of the village to build the local dyke. The village arose at the junction of two roads. A connecting road completed the village. Everdeis’ descendants ordered the build of a church that is dedicated to St. Paul. The church of the nearby village of 's-Heer Abtskerke served as the mother church of Eversdijk. The village could not develop any further, mainly due to the fact that the peatland had become exhausted. In 1815, Eversdijk joined Kapelle. By 1821, the church was in such a state of neglect that it had to be demolished. Presently, Eversdijk consists of a few farms and houses on medieval Kerkring, Kerkhofweg and Eversdijkseweg.

Abbekinderen

Abbekinderen belongs to the village of Kloetinge and also used to belong to the municipality of Kloetinge. As part of the local government reorganisation, a large part of this hamlet was joined to the municipality of Kapelle. The residents’ official place of residence is still Kloetinge (municipality of Goes). Another (small) part of Abbekinderen was included in the town of Goes.
