Kapelle is a circular village. At the village centre is the Protestant Church and around it are the houses. From here, the village grew. The village now has many amenities, a variety of shops and roughly 9000 residents.
Annie M.G. Schmidt
Annie M.G. Schmidt was an author of children’s books who was born in Kapelle. She is known especially for her tales about Jip and Janneke. At the church square, are the home of her birth and a bust. This is not the only tribute to this author, though. There is also a statue of Dikkertje Dap in front of the school on Vroonlandseweg. Furthermore, the cycle tunnel under the railway features drawings and texts about Jip and Janneke. In the Zuidhoek quarter there are art works that are inspired by her. The streets in this quarter are named after some of her stories, such as ‘Petteflet’ and ‘Smeerkees’.
French cemetery
In Kapelle there is a French cemetery. After the Second World War, the mortal remains of all the soldiers who had died on Dutch soil while serving under the French flag which had not been returned to France were buried here. Every year, the municipality of Kapelle holds a memorial service in the French cemetery. Learn more about the French cemetery (in Dutch).
