When you drive into Schore, you immediately notice how open the landscape is here. Fields, orchards, and dikes dominate the view, while the village itself has remained small and cozy. It is precisely this tranquility that makes Schore a lovely place to stop for a while during a walk or bike ride through Zuid-Beveland.
Take some time to stroll through the village, enjoy the view of the polders, or bike toward the Canal through Zuid-Beveland. Here, you’ll discover the Zeeland landscape in its purest form.
A village steeped in history
Schore has existed since the Middle Ages. The village was founded on a higher creek ridge, where people could live safely when large parts of Zeeland were still regularly flooded. The name Schore refers to the salt marshes that used to be found in this area.
World War II left a deep mark on the village. In May 1940, a large part of the village was destroyed. The church was also lost. After the war, Schore was rebuilt. Yet there are still reminders of the old village. The centuries-old churchyard wall, one of Schore’s oldest structures, still surrounds the church.
In the Schorre area
From the village center, you can easily walk or bike right into the polder. Narrow roads wind past fields, orchards, and old dikes. In the spring, the fruit trees are in bloom, and the scent of apple and pear blossoms fills the air. Later in the year, the blossoms give way to ripe apples and pears that are harvested throughout the area.
Why not take a walk or bike ride to the Kanaal door Zuid-Beveland? As you look out over the dike, large cargo ships and pleasure yachts glide peacefully by.
On the outskirts of Schore lies Stal Hexagon, an internationally renowned dressage and breeding stable. Since 1980, horses have been bred and trained here to compete at the highest level in dressage. As a result, the small town of Schore has made a name for itself in the international equestrian world.
Are you traveling with children? If so, Schore is also a great place to take a break. There are two playgroundson Boomweidelaan located close to each other. The smaller one is ideal for young children, while the larger playground offers plenty of space to climb, slide, play soccer, or whiz down the zip line. Next to the playground, you’ll also find a skate park and various fitness equipment.
Practical information
Schore is located right off the A58, making it easily accessible. You can park at Nieuwe Kerkplein, in the center of the village. From there, it’s just a few minutes’ walk into the polder, or you can bike on toward Kapelle, Hansweert, or the Yerseke and Kapelse Moer.
