Wemeldinge Ring Race

Ring riding is a true Zeeland tradition that takes place during the summer months. The competition is about who can knock down the most rings. This is done on a horse or pony. The rider gallops bareback around the course and must spear a ring with a lance. A fixed and special part of the event is the traditional competition for the coveted ladle. Whoever spears the most rings in this part of the competition wins the ladle.

Ring Riding: A Fun Event for All Ages

In the past, the event mainly featured workhorses such as the Trekpaard. Nowadays, other breeds also participate. The event is fun for people of all ages—both horse lovers and those who prefer to watch this traditional spectacle from a distance.

Musical chairs on a horse

At the end of the day, it’s a tradition in Wemeldinge to wrap things up with the so-called “Stoeltjesrijden.” This is a kind of musical chairs played on horseback. The event takes place at “’t Weitje van Gijssel” around 5:00 p.m. on Wilhelminastraat. Will you come watch?
