The leaves are changing color, apples and pears are being harvested, and a crisp breeze is blowing along the Oosterschelde. Fall gives De Bloesem van Zeeland a whole new atmosphere. Put on your coat and sturdy shoes, because there’s plenty to discover both outdoors and indoors, even in the fall.
Take a walk through the orchards
During this season, the landscape changes a little bit every week. The leaves take on warm colors, and fruit is being harvested in the orchards. If you’re in the mood for a brisk walk, you can follow the Fruit Route. This route is 17 kilometers long and starts at the ZeeuwsFruitMuseum in Kapelle. Along the way, you’ll walk past orchards, meadows, and fields. Prefer a shorter loop? With the hiking network, you can easily put together your own route. In wet weather, be sure to wear boots or sturdy shoes, as some trails can get muddy.
Taste Autumn
Of course, no fall day is complete without an apple or pear grown in Zeeland. Throughout the municipality, you’ll find farm stands, market stalls, and fruit vending machines offering local produce. That way, after a walk or bike ride, you can take home a tasty treat right away.
A Walk Along the Oosterschelde
In Wemeldinge, you can enjoy a refreshing walk in the fall. Stroll along the Oosterschelde and check out the boats in the harbor. Or admire the historic Dorpsstraat. Want to learn more about the village along the way? Then follow the Wemeldinge Experience Trail. During the walk, you’ll hear stories about the sea, the region, and the people who live here. Bring your phone and earbuds and discover spots you might otherwise walk right past. Or, would you like to learn more about Wemeldinge’s past? On the Parlevinkers Route, you’ll discover how merchants used to sell goods from rowboats to skippers waiting at the locks.
Go on a gnome hunt in the Kapelse Bos
For young explorers, the Kapelse Kabouterbos is a fun place to visit. Go on a hunt together for the tiny creatures hiding among the trees, and enjoy the colors and sounds of fall along the way. Turn it into a real adventure. Who can find the prettiest leaf, spot the most gnomes, or be the first to hear a bird?
Activities to Look Forward To
In addition to walking, playing, and getting some fresh air, there are also several activities planned for this fall. We’ve listed a few of them for you:
Give your swimming skills a boost
During school breaks, Optisport offers the Zed and Sop Vacation Booster. Children who are already taking swimming lessons get extra practice in small groups. The lessons last at least 1.5 hours, and participants receive a certificate.
Enjoy the saxophone, organ, and harmonium
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., Bruno Alonso and Niels de Klerk will give a concert featuring the saxophone, organ, and harmonium in Kapelle. The concert is part of the “Master and Student in Music” series.
Explore the world of fruit
At the ZeeuwsFruitMuseum, learn all about apples, pears, and fruit growing. Children can take part in a scavenger hunt through the museum and the museum garden, which features about 170 fruit trees.
