The village of Wemeldinge is both authentic and modern, with a rustic main street and a lively marina. Thanks to its central location on the Oosterschelde, Wemeldinge is a popular destination for divers and water sports enthusiasts.

Vliedbergen

The village originally developed around three refuge mounds. These mounds were constructed in the 13th century as residential mounds, sometimes topped with a small fortress to provide protection from enemies. Near the church, you can see two refuge mounds: the church is built on one, and the other is located nearby in a private garden. That is the highest refuge mound in Zeeland. It is 12 meters high. The third was excavated in the 19th century to raise the level of farmland. A unique feature of Wemeldinge is that the church is actually located outside the village. After the great storm surge of 1134, people began living near the new dike, what is now Dorpsstraat. And when the village began to grow in the 19th century, it expanded toward the canal. That’s where the work was. As a result, the oldest part of the village actually ended up outside the village.

Dorpsstraat

If you’re in Wemeldinge, be sure to take a stroll down Dorpsstraat. This street is designated as a Protected Village View. It was originally a dike, which is why it’s situated higher than the rest of the village. The 148 linden trees give this street a unique character. On the facades of several houses, you can still see their former functions, such as the town hall and the farmers’ credit union. At five points along Dorpsstraat, narrow alleys (slopjes) lead to the back streets. If you walk through them, you’ll see that old stones were reused in the construction of the houses. The facades, however, were built with beautiful new stones. The slopjes are named after their (former) residents. It’s worth taking a stroll around.

Mediterranean vacation vibe

In the summer, the Sluisplateau has a Mediterranean vacation vibe, with sailboats and outdoor cafes. You can enjoy a lovely stroll along the boulevard toward the Oosterschelde and the beaches: the outdoor swimming area of Wemeldinge. From the “De Duikbril” and ’t Schip” lookouts, you’ll have a stunning view of the water. When the weather is calm, the water is flat. And that’s porpoise weather; you’ll have a chance to spot this smallest species of whale! On very calm days, you can even hear them snorting as they surface to breathe.

Two windmills

There are two windmills near the harbor: Aeolus and De Hoop. These two tower mills largely define the skyline of Wemeldinge. Due to a feud between a miller and his assistant, they were built in quick succession and very close to each other. Both mills turn regularly and are open most Saturdays. In the evenings, they are often illuminated.
