Kapelle is a ring village. The Dutch Reformed Church is located in the center of the village, with houses surrounding it. The village has grown out from this central point. It is now a village with many amenities, a variety of shops, and a population of about 9,000.

Annie M.G. Schmidt

Children’s book author Annie M.G. Schmidt was born in Kapelle. She is best known for writing the adventures of Jip and Janneke. Her birthplace and a bust of her stand on Kerkplein. But that is not the only tribute to this author. For example, there is a statue of Dikkertje Dap in front of the community school on Vroonlandseweg. There are also drawings and texts about Jip and Janneke on display in the bicycle tunnel under the railroad tracks. And in the Zuidhoek neighborhood, there are works of art that reference her. The streets in this neighborhood are also named after characters from her stories, such as “Petteflet” and “Smeerkees.”

French cemetery

There is a French cemetery in Kapelle. After World War II, the remains of all soldiers who had died under the French flag on Dutch soil and were not repatriated to France were buried there.
