A visit to Kapelle isn't complete without meeting the village's most famous resident. Annie M.G. Schmidt was born here, and her stories are still evident in the streetscape.

On Kerkplein, you’ll find her birthplace and a bust of her. Dive into history

Kapelle’s history dates back a long way. The village grew out of the old settlement of Maalstede, where there was a castle with its own chapel. Later, this chapel was moved, and the village of Kapelle developed around the new church. In the surrounding area, there used to be several castles and fortified houses, including Maalstede Castle and Bruëlis Castle. The castles are gone, but their sites are still recognizable. Bruëlis Castle once stood near the deer park, and remnants of the former castle grounds can still be found along the Maalstede.

Kapelle played a special role during World War II. At the French Cemetery, more than two hundred French soldiers who died on Dutch soil during the war are laid to rest. The cemetery is an impressive place where you can take a moment to reflect on their stories.

Every year, around May 17, the French Memorial Ceremony takes place. During this ceremony, the fallen are honored in the presence of representatives from the French Embassy, veterans, and local residents, among others. Kapelle is centrally located in Zuid-Beveland and is easily accessible via the A58. You can also easily reach the village by train; the station is within walking distance of the town center. If you’re coming by car, you can park for free at various locations in and around the town center.
